Features of the Hario Slim Coffee Mill

Design & Appearance

Style

This Hario coffee mill is simple and functional. The Hario grinder is all-plastic, with a transparent grind container that marks the quantity for 1 – 2 cups of coffee. The shape is pleasing and modern. I didn’t really like the handle though, the quality doesn’t seem that high. I’ve looked around and it seems like other users share this feeling, especially when their handle actually flew off after using it for a while.

Burrs

The Coffee Mill Mini uses ceramic burrs. Ceramic burrs are considered to be better than stainless steel burrs because heat generated is kept to a minimum when grinding. This manual grinder is quite smooth, especially if you have some biceps.

Capacity

The Hario coffee grinder can store up to 24g of coffee beans, which can be stored away in the grind container. With this, you can grind 2 cups of coffee max without switching out the grinds and adding more beans. This could be a hassle for those who want to brew more at a time. On the plus side, I like using this grinder to gravel, because the Hario Mini is – well, mini!

Low Noise Level

Just like all other hand held coffee grinders, it’s very quiet. If you plan to have a cup everyday in the morning and are a considerate coffee-lover, then you’ll think about this if you always go for a cup in the morning.

Ease Of Use

Hario Slim Grinder Settings

I had no problem adjusting this ceramic coffee mill. You simply remove the hopper, there’s a knob beneath it, and you just simply turn it. This grinder features a spring system to keep the burrs from wobbling, which works well for coarser grinds. Despite this, the Hario Slim Grinder still works best in the finer-grind to mid-grind range, perfect for those who drink espresso or aeropress.

Here’s the grind settings you should use for each brewing method:

Brewing Method     //     No. of Clicks

– Turkish (Nearly)             //     0 – 1
– Espresso                        //     3 – 5
– Aeropress (Inverted)     //     6 – 8
– Melitta Pourover           //     9
– Chemex                         //     10 – 12
– French Press                //     14 – 16
– Cold Brew                     //     20 +

So I tested the mini grinder a bit and came up with the results above.  You can try it out and tweak it according to your taste.

Removable Base

After using the grinder, I had no problem unscrewing the grind container and transferring it to my pourover. This plastic container also has markings that’re handy in getting the right amount of quantity for the amount you’d like to brew.

Low Mess

The compact design is great for tucking the machine away, but it does make it more difficult to pour beans and clean the grinds in the container. These aren’t really difficult though.

Ease Of Cleaning & Maintenance

Cleaning and Maintenance

The grinder is very simple and easy to clean. Since the burrs are ceramic, there are no troubles with rusting. You either clean it off with a cleaning brush or rinse it off completely..

Price

This grinder’s price is really affordable. I think it’s a great deal considering the price and quality of grind it produces. I am slightly concerned about the handle, but even if it breaks, I don’t think anyone will cry over it as it’s quite cheap to begin with.

The Coffee Barrister’s Verdict[CONCLUSION]

Overall, I think the Hario Coffee Mill Slim Grinder (Mini) is a good manual coffee grinder. The grinder produces very nice grind in the fine – mid range, and inconsistent grinds at the coarser settings.

If you’re looking for a coffee grinder that can do better French Press, then you might want to go for the Hario Skerton with the 3rd party upgrade instead.

Do keep in mind that the capacity is quite small, even for a hand grinder, but I think it’s fine if you don’t mind pouring the grinds out and putting more beans in. I am concerned about the common complaint where the crank handle wears down quite quickly, although it didn’t happen to me yet.

If you are still unsure, then perhaps check out the more robust, Porlex JP-30 Grinder instead. All in all, the Hario Mini Mill is extremely economical, which makes it hard to turn down!
